Appearance
Sweet Garlic (Tulbaghia simmleri) is a hardy, clump-forming perennial with long, narrow, grey-green leaves. Its delicate, star-shaped purple flowers appear in clusters, adding a pop of colour above the foliage. Very similar to Society Garlic but without the pungent garlic smell.
Use
Most often used as an ornamental border plant.
Preferred Climate
Tulbaghia simmleri thrives in Australia's temperate to subtropical climates, making it ideal for regions with mild winters and warm summers. It is drought-tolerant once established and can handle light frost.
Best Position and Soil Type
Sweet Garlic prefers a sunny or partly shaded position with well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It can adapt to a variety of soil types but performs best in loamy or sandy soils with good drainage.
Mature Height and Width
This plant grows to a mature height of approximately 30-40 cm and spreads to a width of 30 cm, making it a perfect choice for smaller garden spaces or as a ground cover.
Care
These are young tubestock plants and will require regular watering until they are well-established. Once settled, Sweet Garlic is relatively low-maintenance and drought-tolerant. Trim back spent flowers and leaves to encourage fresh growth. Avoid overwatering, as it prefers well-drained soil.
